On the doorstep

Nutbourne has several notable attractions, all on the doorstep of the House or Annexe and an easy walk away.

  1. The Rising Sun – Also known as The Riser, The Rising Sun is Nutbourne’s 16th Century Free House. A great spot for a beer indoors or out; also featuring a tasty seasonal menu. 5 minutes walk. Could be a longer stagger back…
  2. Nutbourne Vineyards – Our neighbours, the Gladwin family, own and run Nutbourne Vineyards (as well as several successful restaurants in London) which you can visit for wine tasting, wine tours, off sales and special occasions… 10 minutes walk.
  3. Nyetimber Vineyard – Another specialist producer of English sparkling wine – it cannot be called Champagne – Nyetimber holds various open days, wine tours and popular fine-dining experiences… 15 minutes walk.

Our favourite pub, for a drink or a meal, is undoubtedly The Rising Sun just a couple of hundred yards away from the house. However, if an alternative is sought, the pubs below will all please both for food and drink.

  3. The George – Great food and locally owned, Burpham
  4. The Sportsman – Great cooking and fine views, Amberley

Sports and entertainment

We are spoilt in West Sussex to have some fantastic sports and entertainment venues catering to many tastes. Listed below are a few of our favourites, many more can be found online.

  1. Arundel Castle Cricket Club – Probably the most beautiful ground in England, frequent host to overseas visiting sides and a perfect venue for a day’s first class cricket 20 minutes away.
  2. Cowdray Estate – Home to a pleasing golf course as well as a world famous polo ground. Chukka, chukka, chukka! Enjoy a day out at Cowdray around 30 minutes away.
  3. Goodwood Estate – Famous for its motoring events (Revival, Festival of Speed), horseracing, golf and other activities. Goodwood is around 35 minutes away.
  4. West Chiltington Lawn Tennis Club – If you’re feeling active and fancy a game of tennis WCLTC has a public court. Hire the keys at the Nisa Local shop in West Chiltington.
  5. West Chiltington Recreation Park – If the children are feeling active, or restless, head over to the play park with swings, roundabouts, skateboard ramps and even an outdoor gym.
  6. West Chiltington & Thakeham Cricket Club – If you enjoy watching village cricket, with a glass or two in hand, drive 5 minutes or walk 20 minutes over fields to the WCTCC ground.
  7. West Sussex Golf Club – WSGC is the closest course to the house, under 10 minutes away by car. The course graces many UK Top 50 lists and welcomes handicap-certified visitors.

Nutbourne does not have a village shop, although the Nisa Local in West Chiltington caters for most immediate needs. If you require a bigger shop consider any of the following:

Some of the paintings in the Annexe were purchased from the Zimmer Stewart Gallery, once of Arundel but now exclusively online.

This part of West Sussex abounds with high-end car dealerships, offering the discerning purchaser all manner of performance and luxury motors. Listed below a few of our favourites:

  1. Bramley Motor Cars – A delight hosting all manner of machinery about 30 minutes drive away.
  2. Church’s Performance Cars – A good selection of modern sports and performance cars around 20 minutes away.
  3. Harbour Cars – One of the South Coast’s most reputable Porsche dealers down near Chichester about 45 minutes drive.
  4. Mole Valley Cars– An eclectic collection of cars including Morgan and Noble machines around 30 minutes away.
  5. Targa Florio Cars – Another purveyor of some fine cars down past Goodwood around 45 minutes away.
  6. West Sussex Specialist Cars – Our closest dealer about 15 minutes away with sports and prestige models in stock.

Hunting, Shooting, Fishing

We don’t go in for a great deal of huntin’ or shootin’ but enjoy a spot of fishin’. Nonetheless, the local area has a lot to please all field sports enthusiasts.
